The safety and wellbeing of all pupils is our highest priority. As a school, we have a statutory duty of care to ensure children are supervised at all times during the school day. To support this, a range of spaces and activities are available at break so that pupils can feel safe, comfortable, and engaged:
Separate playgrounds are provided for different year groups.
A dedicated Quiet Room is available for those who prefer a calm environment.
A Games Room offers structured indoor activities.
Pupils who wish to read may use the Library, with passes issued for this purpose.
For safeguarding reasons, pupils in Years 7–11 must remain on the school premises during break time. This is a non-negotiable safeguarding measure. Even if parental permission is given for a child to leave the premises at break (for example, to go to local shops), the school cannot authorise this. Any pupil who leaves the site without permission will be treated as truanting, and the school’s behaviour policy will apply.
Lunchtime is divided into two sittings, with each year group allocated a separate area of the lunch zone. This ensures that year groups do not mix and that all pupils have a safe and orderly space to eat.
Year 7 & 8: 12:45 – 13:15
Year 9, 10 & 11: 13:15 – 13:45
After lunch, pupils are directed to the playgrounds for free time before afternoon registration at 13:45.
Pupils opt in or out of school lunches on a termly basis. Parents are required to sign the lunchtime contract, and pupils must follow all lunchtime rules.
For safeguarding reasons, pupils who opt in for school lunches are not permitted to leave the premises at lunchtime.
Please note that we are unable to accommodate additional pupils for lunch on an ad hoc basis (for example, when it is raining). The opt-in or opt-out decision applies for the full term. Our lunchtime supervisors are allocated according to the number of pupils registered at the beginning of the term, and in order to maintain the correct adult-to-child ratios, we cannot admit additional children.
We therefore kindly ask parents of pupils who have opted out to ensure that suitable alternative arrangements are in place in the event of bad weather.
From the October mid-term onwards, we also run a range of lunchtime clubs which all pupils are welcome to join. Pupils who do not stay for lunch but take part in a club will register with the club leader and will have their lunch under the supervision of that teacher in the classroom. These pupils will not be able to access the lunch hall, for the same safeguarding reasons outlined above.
