As part of their Identity in the Media Scheme of Work, our Year 7s were set a challenge to come up with a unique product and a convincing sales pitch to be in with the chance to go on a trip to GBC. Let’s watch this Behind the Scenes video to see what the most persuasive product-makers in their classes created at the GBC Studios.
The English Department launched its first Letter Writing Project earlier this year and it has been a great success! Our Year 7 students have been busy this year writing letters to the Year 6 students at Bishop and St Bernard’s to ease their transition into secondary school. All students both sent and received 2 letters each, and they all had a great time writing to their ‘pen friends’ and decorating their envelopes. Here’s a video of their experience…
On to our next video put together by Mr Segovia. His year 8 Art students have all been working on a digital mural project inspired by different subject areas. Students have been hard at work coming up with ideas in teams and developing their ideas into digital final outcomes. Hopefully some of these might become actual school murals one day. Let’s have a look at what they came up with.
And now over to the Year 7/8 Form Tutor Pupil of the Month Awards. These students have been awarded the Pupil of Month Award for their consistent demonstration of good pupils skills. So well done to all!
The yr7s and their form tutors have been working on an interactive pastoral project involving music, dance, art and gymnastics. They have worked together as a form class to produce a fun and vibrant music video that tells a story of how we should all provide support for one another. They wanted to embrace the idea of family and demonstrate that by helping one another, we are essentially superheroes, BUT superheroes with no capes! A special thanks goes to all the teachers and students involved in making the video, Ms Bonfante and Ms Gonzalez for leading the gymnastic squad, Ms Bishop for leading her dancers, Mr Reyes for his brilliant video editing skills, Mr Soussi for some special footage and Mrs Mena for leading the project! Members of the club, wrote the song and had a exhilarating time creating the music video. A special thanks to the Music department for loaning out the instruments and finding the backing track, Ms Lia for her fantastic video editing skills, Ms Belilo for loaning us the hats and Mrs Mena for leading the project. A former student at Westside School is currently in the middle of a UK tour as part of an interactive and multi-sensory theatre production. Marta Miranda - who was the school’s Head Girl in her final year - is performing as an actor-musician in “The Bar At The Edge Of Time”, a gig theatre style production aimed at adults with profound and multiple learning difficulties, staged by Frozen Light Theatre. With Marta performing across various disciplines, as well as being the company’s drummer (and making cocktails for audience members as part of the interactive experience!), the tour has already taken the company to many venues across the United Kingdom, with final performances in Inverness in June.
“This journey began back in Westside School,” states Marta, “and I must say it is thanks to the constant support, motivation and inspiration I received from my Drama and Music teachers in both Westside and Bayside. I feel very grateful for being raised in Gibraltar where theatre is a big part of the community”.

Outstanding Feedback for our A-Level Dance Students and Teachers!
We are thrilled to announce an extraordinary feat accomplished by our exceptional A Level Dance students at Westside. Demonstrating unparalleled dedication and talent, our staff and students have not only exceeded expectations but have also emerged as frontrunners in the realm of dance education.
In the recent AQA examinations, our A Level Dance students soared to new heights, achieving remarkable success in the practical component of their coursework. This specific component, known as 'Performance and Choreography,' encompasses a trio of challenges that put their skills and creativity to the test:
Solo Performance: Students executed a solo performance in the style of a studied practitioner, showcasing their technical prowess and artistic expression.
Quartet Performance: Our students collaborated harmoniously in a quartet performance, displaying their ability to synchronize and harmonize within a group setting.
Group Choreography: The creative ingenuity of our students shone through in their group choreography, where they orchestrated captivating movements and storytelling through dance.
These components, externally evaluated by the exam board, collectively constitute 50% of the students' overall grade. It is with immense pride that we share the astounding news of Westside's students securing an extraordinary 87.9% average mark in comparison to the UK national average of 71.1%. This achievement unequivocally positions our Dance Department among the top echelons of excellence in the UK.
Furthermore, the achievement was exemplified by the fact that several of our students were tantalizingly close, just 1 or 2 marks away, from attaining the highest possible marks in each component. A testament to their unwavering commitment and the exceptional guidance provided by our dedicated dance team.
It is important to emphasise that this achievement was not only marked by numbers and percentages but by the sheer dedication, passion, and talent exhibited by our students. Their achievements reflect the tireless efforts put forth by both our students and our esteemed Dance Department, under the leadership of Mrs. Hemmi together with Ms Bishop and Ms McGrail.
As we celebrate these phenomenal achievements, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported and nurtured our students on this journey: students, parents, staff, and supporters. This triumph is a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines our educational community at Westside and the heights we can attain when we collectively strive for excellence.
Congratulations to our remarkable A Level Dance students for illuminating the path of success with their graceful footsteps. We eagerly anticipate the continued flourishing of their artistic journeys and the enduring legacy they will leave on the world of dance.
