This course is a Supportive Option that will provide pupils with a GCSE equivalent, but it will not provide for continued studies at A-Level in that subject.

Students choose this subject if they have an interest in working with children and they are interested in all areas of child development. Students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of child development in key areas such as physical, social, intellectual and emotional development and child needs in various contexts. 

The course provides a basis for further study of Child Development which could lead to work as an Early Years Practitioner, a Classroom Assistant or Health Support Worker.  It could also be the starting point for careers in Nursing or Teaching.

Programme of Study

The topics covered over the two years include: 


Assessments

Unit 1 

One written exam of 1 hour 15 minutes worth (40%)

Unit 2

In this unit, students will learn how to create a safe environment for children from birth to five years in childcare settings. They will investigate and choose equipment that is both suitable and safe for use and will learn about their nutrition and dietary needs (30%).

Unit 3

In this unit, students will learn the expected developmental norms for children from one to five years. They will use observation, research techniques and skills to investigate these development norms and explore their findings. Students will also learn the importance of creating plans and providing different play activities to support children in their development (30%).
