Welcome to the Alternative Learning Centre (ALC) at Westside School

Empowering Minds, Transforming Futures! The ALC is tasked with providing a safe, engaging and nurturing environment for children who have severe behavioural, emotional or social difficulties; and provide a framework for them to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to go on to either further higher education or seek meaningful employment.

In the ALC, we believe that every child deserves access to quality education and a supportive learning environment. Our Alternative Learning Centre is designed with a focus on nurturing the unique needs of vulnerable children who exhibit behaviours of concern. We understand that traditional educational approaches may not always meet the diverse requirements of every child, and that's why we have developed a specialised program to cater to their individual strengths and challenges.

Our curriculum is carefully crafted to provide a holistic learning experience that goes beyond traditional academic subjects. We recognize that vulnerable children often face various socio-economic or emotional challenges. Therefore, they may require a different approach to education. The Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) is an organisation renowned for its innovative and learner-centric approach to education. The ASDAN Short Course Curriculum we offer is a series of engaging programs that focus on skills development, personal growth, and real-world application. About Our Alternative Learning Curriculum:

Tailored Learning Plans:

Each child is unique, and our curriculum adapts to their individual learning styles and needs. We work closely with educators, behavioural specialists, and caregivers to create personalised learning plans that maximise each child's potential.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL):

Building a strong foundation of social and emotional skills is crucial for the overall well-being of vulnerable children. Our curriculum integrates Social Emotional Learning into daily activities, helping children develop resilience, self-awareness, and positive relationships.

Life Skills Development:

Beyond academic knowledge, our curriculum emphasises the development of practical life skills. We believe in equipping children with the tools they need to navigate the challenges of everyday life, fostering independence and confidence.

Inclusive and Supportive Environment:

Our learning spaces are designed to be inclusive and supportive, fostering a sense of belonging for every child. We prioritise creating a safe and nurturing environment where children can express themselves and explore their potential without fear of judgement.

The ALC team is committed to breaking down barriers to education and providing a pathway for vulnerable children to overcome challenges and reach their full potential. Our holistic approach is not just a curriculum; it's a transformative journey that empowers individuals to thrive intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Below you can find some of the amazing work done by our excellent team who are committed to shaping a brighter future for every child, one empowered mind at a time.

Key Components of the ASDAN Short Course Curriculum

ASDAN courses prioritise the development of practical skills that go beyond theoretical knowledge. Learners actively engage in hands-on activities, projects, and challenges that enhance their problem-solving abilities and creativity.

2. Personal and Social Development:

The curriculum places a strong emphasis on nurturing the personal and social aspects of each learner. Through reflective exercises, teamwork, and community engagement, participants develop a deep understanding of themselves and their role in society.

3. Real-World Application:

ASDAN courses are designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world. Learners are encouraged to apply their knowledge and skills in authentic settings, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in life beyond formal education.

4. Individualised Learning:

Recognizing that every learner is unique, the ASDAN Short Course Curriculum is flexible and allows for individualised learning paths. This adaptability ensures that each participant can explore and develop their strengths while addressing areas that may need improvement.

5. Assessment for Learning:

Instead of traditional exams, ASDAN courses utilise continuous assessment methods. This fosters a positive learning experience, where learners are encouraged to reflect on their progress, set goals, and receive constructive feedback.
